Scheduling a Shopify sale is not only about picking a start time. The harder half is making sure the prices return to normal when the sale ends. This guide covers the options Shopify gives you, the timezone mistake that catches most stores, and the end-of-sale step people forget.
Know what you are actually scheduling
Shopify offers a few different mechanisms, and they behave differently at the end of the sale:
- Automatic discounts and discount codes apply at checkout and expire on their own, but they do not change the price shown on the product page.
- Editing the price or compare-at price directly changes the storefront price, but Shopify does not automatically restore it later.
- A scheduled price-change app edits prices at a start time and is expected to restore them at an end time.
Decide which one matches the effect you want. If you need the product page itself to show the sale price, you are changing prices, and you need a plan to change them back.
Snapshot the original prices first
Before scheduling anything, export the current price, compare-at price, SKU, and variant ID for every product in the sale. Keep this file in your own storage. It is the source of truth for restoring prices later, independent of any app.
Set the start and end time in the store timezone
Write the timezone next to both times. A sale set for 9 AM without a timezone is ambiguous, and a mismatch between your local time and the store timezone is the most common scheduling error. Confirm which timezone the tool uses before you rely on it.
Preview and test on a small set
Review the planned price for every variant before scheduling: check rounding, already-discounted items, and excluded products. Then run the sale on a few test products first and confirm the storefront, product page, and cart look correct on desktop and mobile.
Confirm what happens when the sale ends
This is the step stores skip. Know exactly how prices return: automatically from a snapshot, or manually from your export. Set a reminder shortly after the end time to verify a sample from every collection.
SaleGuard is built around this full cycle: snapshot original prices, preview the change, schedule the start, and restore automatically from the snapshot when the end time arrives, with a downloadable backup you keep either way.
Most common mistake
A wrong timezone. Always write the timezone next to the start and end time, and confirm which timezone your scheduling tool actually uses.
